How to find niche keywords to leverage Google ranking and business

Going off the beaten track to find profitable keyword phrases

You can tap into many streams of search traffic by picking the right keyword niches and optimising your web pages for them. Broad phrases usually have too much competition and you'll get 'buried in the crowd'. Here's how to find these untapped streams…

Go to the Google keyword research tool. Enter your initial broad phrase (in the "Word or phrase" box and click the "Search" button. After the list comes up, click on "Local Monthly Searches" to order the list by local search volume.

eg here’s a sample from a list generated from "picnic supplies":

See what comes up and identify general sub-areas that emerge - eg under "picnic supplies" you'll get things related to: hampers, tables, chairs, games, and blankets.

Look for keyword phrases higher in the list that more people are searching for.

Note any indirectly related phrases such as "party themes". They may give new business ideas. You could approach party suppliers to link to/ from your site to generate business leads and increase your search engine ranking.

Next we type-in each area in turn and see what comes up - eg under "picnic hampers":

Phrases with high monthly searches may give you ideas for products that could sell really well. To filter out unwanted subject areas, you can un-tick words under "Contains" on the left of the screen.

You can also bunch phrases together to write an article around, eg: "create your own hamper" and "gourmet food hampers". Jot ideas down for article content from your knowledge/ experience and what you’ve gleaned from the web.

In your article, show relevant benefits of products like yours, with links to your product sales pages. People looking for picnic hamper ideas may find your article helpful, click on to your sales page and buy a wicker hamper set from you. If not, they may ask you a question giving an opportunity to build relationship with them and sell something later.
